Modern Dance derives from technique developed in Ballet and takes movement to a new modern level for students. We are excited to offer the ISTD Contemporary syllabus which follows set exercises and choreographed routines throughout each grade to allow students to build up strength & flexibility and start understanding the different styles and energy dance has to offer. This class is also extremely beneficial to those students going onto to GCSE, A-Level & Degree in Dance or may want to study Contemporary Dance as they progress.

In addition to Modern Dance we also offer Contemporary Dance – students study release floor work, Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham techniques. The aim of all of our subjects at Timmins is to offer students a vast all round understanding of dance. A strong ballet technique is highly recommended to study both Modern & Contemporary Dance.

    Contemporary Modern Jazz

One minute you may be dancing to the rhythm of a drum, the next to a funky jazz style. You may explore contrast between expansion and relaxation or learn to isolate in a slick stylish mood. Whatever the atmosphere of the class, it will be a wonderful opportunity to react and interact with other members and really dance to express your feelings.

During the grades this subject is paired with Theatre Craft.

  • Ballet point shoes with the dancer standing on her full points in fifth position.

    POINTE WORK

This class has been designed by our patron Kate Parkes to work on pure classical ballet technique and stamina whilst wearing pointe shoes. Based on classes she studied at the Royal Ballet School & Central School of Ballet, this class is suitable for students who have just started pointe work and for those more advanced wishing to perfect their technique, steps are adapted to suit ability.

In ballet, the pointe shoe should become part of the foot, so the more they are worn for class the better. It will then become more and more natural to dance in them.

Your teacher will advise when your child’s feet are ready for point shoes and vary’s depending on growth. Exercises without the shoes are also given in this class to strengthen feet, it’s advisable these are worked on at home to get stronger and avoid injuries.

When the time is right an expert point shoe fitter will help your child decide which model of shoe they should use. Many dancers stay with the same make during their careers.

The aim of this class is to develop skills ready for the higher grades where the majority of children go onto progress through the school until their teens and beyond. This class is a lovely enjoyable social class for the early years.

    What follows Pre-School ballet?

We encourage each child to take a very short exam together in a group once they are old enough, they receive a recognised medal & certificate from the IDTA (International Dance Teachers Association) for this, each child loves getting a medal and after this they are ready to join the next class and gradually continue through the school.

During your time at the school we let parents come and watch the progress of classes every so often, and every other year we do an exciting show in a professional theatre which all children participate in with costume. This is also a good opportunity for parents and children new to the school to see the progression throughout the school. Of course the pre-school children steal the show and love every second!
